I was looking at how were drop ships implemented, and found http://www.adempiere.com/Sponsored_Development:_Drop_Ship thanks to CarlosRuiz on IRC.
It seems, however, that the functionality described there was never implemented, was never merged, or was reverted, at least not completely. It seems as use case 3 was never properly addressed, as there no way, currently, to ship an order marked as drop shipment, as it might happen when your customer requests that you drop ship an order to one of their customers (in this case, the products to ship will either be in your warehouse, need to be manufactured, or bought from suppliers and received into your warehouse, the exact details are outside of the scope of this ticket and should be handled separately), as the Generate Shipments processes will not accept orders that are marked as drop shipment.
The suggested workaround (adding the drop shipping address to the business partner) still works, but it again requires contortions (as described in the linked page) to send the order confirmation to your actual customer
